November 2024 Blog

  • Monthly Community Service Hours Completed 9 (as of November 26)
  • Cumulative Semester Service Hours Completed 22 (as of Nov 26)(10 hours more than required for Fall 2024)

November has been a busy month for sure!! With our academics becoming more challenging and the holidays approaching, there’s been little downtime. Despite the hectic schedule, I was fortunate to participate in my community’s food pantry Thanksgiving distribution day on Saturday, November 23rd, from 6 AM to 12 PM. Volunteers had prepared the food boxes earlier in the week, so our primary task on Saturday was to load turkeys and other food items into the cars of families who came to collect their meals. Over 300 families received food that day. While it was physically demanding to carry and load the heavy boxes, it was an incredibly rewarding experience. Knowing that these efforts allowed so many families to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal made every moment worthwhile.

Beyond this, I’ve also continued my role as a high school volunteer tutor for a student at Destrehan High—my alma mater! Initially, I was assigned to tutor a 10th-grade student in math, but due to personal reasons, the student had to withdraw, and I was reassigned to another 10th-grade student who is currently taking 9th-grade classes to catch up academically. This change turned out to be a wonderful opportunity. Instead of solely focusing on math, I now tutor a broader range of subjects, including civics and science. This variety has made our sessions dynamic and engaging, and it’s been incredibly fulfilling to see my student build confidence in areas he once struggled with.

Academically, November was marked by the completion of the renal and pulmonary module, which has been my favorite block so far. The lectures on asthma stood out as particularly fascinating. Asthma’s prevalence in both childhood and adulthood makes it an essential topic to understand deeply, and I found these discussions both enlightening and practical. The module also included a Case-Based Learning (CBL) session on hypertension, which I thoroughly enjoyed. My previous experience as a phlebotomist proved invaluable during this session, as it helped me answer the questions with confidence and actively contribute to the discussion. It was cool to see how my clinical background enhanced my understanding of the material.

Overall, November has been a month of growth and reflection. Between academic challenges, volunteering, and meaningful community contributions, I’ve deepened my appreciation for my pharmacology program and the opportunities. Balancing these commitments has been challenging but deeply rewarding, leaving me excited for what lies ahead in the next month.
